Albert’s story

Born prematurely at just 25 weeks, Albert suffered a bleed on the brain at only two days old. He underwent multiple surgeries, including life-saving bowel surgery.  By the time Albert was almost 2 years old, he had sadly spent more time in hospital than at home.

When he was finally discharged, his family found support at Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity.

Initially, Albert struggled!

Due to the multiple surgeries, he found basic things like lying on his front unbearable and simply didn’t have the core strength to stand without assistance. Despite this, Albert was eager to play, laugh and be a part of the world around him.

DVLCC took a holistic approach to Albert’s development, and he slowly began to realise his own potential and started to flourish.

Albert attended all sessions at the charity including physiotherapy/ conductive education, music therapy, outreach and hydrotherapy. He learnt to stand unsupported, beginning to walk with a four-wheeled walker, improving his confidence, learning to play and improving his physical development.

By the time Albert left the charity he was not only able to walk but had even started to run, completely unsupported – something his parents had once feared would never be possible.

Today, Albert is a bright, happy little boy. While challenges still lie ahead, he is about to take his next big step – starting school, making friends and discovering everything life has to offer.

“We will forever be thankful to DVLCC, with their support, Albert has come on leaps and bounds. Now, our little boy runs around the park, which we never thought would happen. Without the help of the charity, he just wouldn’t be where he is now.” – Lisa, Albert’s mum.
