Sessions occur in both group and one-to-one sessions, providing a space to develop independence, concentration and social and self-awareness in a playful and intrinsically interactive way. A wide range of musical instruments, including the voice, are used to encourage active engagement in shared music making. Both known and improvised music can offer the chance to encourage a child’s natural creativity and opportunity for spontaneous play, as well as supporting communication, listening and motor skills.

The service is run in collaboration with Nordoff and Robins, the largest independent music charity in the UK. All their therapists are trained to masters level and engage in continual professional development. Our music therapist, Kylie, has over 10 years of experience working with people with additional needs.

How has music therapy helped our children?

“I don’t think there’s another service that compares. We feel so lucky to be able to access it. You can tell that the staff really want to help and want Elsie to do well. It’s just so nice to have another cheerleader.”

– Elsie’s mum, Debi

Born at 23 weeks and 5 days, Elsie’s prematurity meant that her development was considerably delayed. With so many unknowns, Elsie’s parents weren’t sure what her future would look like until they came to DVLCC.

What our parents say

Freddie is able to be himself and to express himself fully – which he takes great pride in doing! I come away from the sessions filled with happiness and joy. Thank you so much for the opportunity. We can’t wait to see what more Freddie learns through music therapy!

Anna, mum of Freddie

Shay is always excited when we tell him he’s going to music, he signs ‘music’ and points the way to the building. While Shay can’t talk yet he is very communicative and expressive so these sessions give him a space to do just that. It’s been really nice for me to see Shay explore and see his confidence grow.
